The speed of selecting a VPN is an important factor, and we use several intensive tests in two countries (UK and US) to find out how the service performs.
(Since the next generation of ExpressVPN’s Light way protocol is still in beta, we’ve run our core experiments using OpenVPN – but in a moment, it’s even more so)
The process began in the UK, where we logged in to 25 samples of ExpressVPN’s OpenVPN-enabled server, recorded the initial connection time, and ran some ping tests to check for delayed issues. These will not necessarily affect download speeds, but they are still a significant part of the service experience (if half the servers are always down, or connection times and delays change drastically, this is going to be bad news).
Our first experiment showed that 92% of connections were made in three to four seconds, a very good start (many VPNs take twice as long, some are even slower). This did not only apply to nearby servers: we also saw the same speed when connecting from the UK to Pakistan, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Elsewhere, the latency was within our expected range, and geolocation checks showed that all servers were in their advertised location.
We checked performance using benchmarking sites Speed Test and TestMyNet to measure download speeds from European and US locations.
ExpressVPN averages 135-140 Mbps from European data centers capable of 400-600 Mbps. It’s not the fastest we’ve seen, but it’s high enough for most tasks, devices and connections.
Our US connection, capable of up to 600 Mbps, has given us impressive results of 200-220 Mbps. It reached our final review with the 200-250 Mbps ExpressVPN This is a close match, suggesting it is a good indicator of top speed.
While these tests are interesting, they only tell us about the maximum speeds in the UK and US servers. That’s why we’re also running individual speed tests on ExpressVPN’s most remote servers from the UK, looking for a location that doesn’t provide what you need.
Crossing long-distance inevitably implies a large drop in speed, but ExpressVPN usually performs very well. Connections from the UK to Malaysia quickly reached 49 Mbps; Brazil (23 Mbps), Bangladesh (2MMbps) and Nepal (2MMbps) are slow but very usable and even Kenya, our slowest location at 1MMbps, was good for HD video browsing and streaming.
The light way protocol of ExpressVPN should be speedier, at least in theory. It’s still in beta so not ready for full testing, but we’ve set it up in the data center system anyway and taken an instant look.
The results were positive, with download speeds on our nearest UK server increasing from an average of 120 Mbps to 165 Mbps using OpenVPN with Light way (this is a welcome 37.5% jump.)
As we expected, Lightweight’s performance advantage decreased with more long-distance connections, but we still got some benefits. US connections from the UK using OpenVPN averaged 110 Mbps, for example, 125 Mbps with Light way (a 14% increase).
While it’s not revolutionary, light ways first public Windows Beta was our first result from day one, so it’s just the beginning the technology already provides clean performance benefits and we’re interested to see how it develops leehee express myung ah.
Windows client
The ExpressVPN Windows Client has a comfortable and familiar interface that makes you feel at home instantly. A large on/off button allows you to activate the service if needed, a clear status display shows you the current server, a select location button enables you to pick something else, and a menu button at the top left gives quick access to other features.
There are several ways to choose the best server. A smart location feature has chosen the server closest to you. You can double-click a country to access its optimal location, or browse each location within a country and choose one manually. A search box lets you search for locations by keyword, you can add individual locations to your favorites list, and your last position is always just one click away.
The client also makes smart use of its system tray icon. Right-clicking brings up a menu that includes your last three locations, and choosing one of these will instantly connect you without opening the entire client.
The location list does not initially display any information about the speed of its servers, something that can help you choose the fastest location. The client has a speed test feature that it can add to it for you and it provides much more useful information than the competition, including an estimate of the delay and download speed.
An enabled settings dialog lets you choose from five protocol variants: New Light way, OpenVPN UDP, OpenVPN TCP, L2TP – IPSEC and IKEV2 (PPTP is no longer on offer as it is very insecure.)
Elsewhere, when the VPN connection is down, a quill switch blocks all Internet traffic, reducing the likelihood of any data leaks. It does not involve any setup, it is enabled by default and is always ready to protect your privacy.
It also works. We’ve used multiple strategies to force OpenVPN and IKEV2 connections, but the client blocks Internet traffic, notifies us with desktop notifications, and reconnects within seconds, handling everything properly.
Lower-level technical touches include basic IPv6 leak protection and the ability to use your default DNS servers when using VPN (you will use ExpressVPN’s own by default).
One of the highlights of the app is the support for split tunneling, a smart technology that enables you to determine which applications are using VPN and using your regular internet connection. If an application doesn’t work after your VPN expires (email client, say), you can use your normal Internet connection instead. And if you only use your VPN for one or two applications – a browser, a torrent application – redirecting everything else out of the tunnel can improve their performance.
Android app
If you’re new to ExpressVPN, installing an Android app works just like any other. Go to the Play Store, find the app, install it as usual, and work through the signup process.
If you have already set up an ExpressVPN account, there are some easy options. We went to the ExpressVPN Web Console on our Windows system, chose Setup> Android Page, scanned the QR code, and the app downloaded and installed automatically (you need to allow the installation from outside the Play Store on your phone for this to work).
We still had to choose a few basic setups, for example deciding if we wanted to allow the app to send anonymous analytics back to ExpressVPN, otherwise, the process was over in a matter of seconds.
The app looks great and works the same way as the Windows version. A great location picker makes it quick and easy to find and reconnect to specific servers, you can connect and disconnect with one click, and the straightforward interface lets you check your current location and Android VPN status at a glance.
A privacy and security tools menu adds some useful features to help verify your connection, including the option to generate a secure password by displaying your current IP address and location, checking DNS and WebRTTC leaks. Most of the tools of ExpressVPN have been on this website most of the time but it is much more convenient to access them in apps.
The Android app has dropped some more advanced features from the Windows client. For example, there is no speed test, which means there is no indication of server speed, slow and overloaded local list.
The settings section gives you no control over DNS, but it supports more integrated Kill Switch and ExpressVPN’s latest Light way protocol, as well as OpenVPN UDP and TCP.
Elsewhere, split tunneling, a convenient bonus addition, enables you to determine which applications should or should not use a VPN. For example, if you were only interested in Netflix, you could set up ExpressVPN to channel your Netflix app traffic through security, everything else could go through your regular connection, and performance would probably improve.
The auto-connect feature is especially welcome, as the option to voluntarily connect you to a VPN whenever you join unreliable networks.
The ‘App and Website Shortcuts’ feature provides a configurable toolbar in the Connection window that can hold up to five shortcuts for your favorite applications. This is a very simple idea, but a useful one, which helps you to launch a commonly used application with a tap as soon as you are connected.
Problems?
If none of this works as you expect, the new app support gives you quick access to support documents without having to go to the website, while an ‘our email’ link gives you more help when you need it.
It doesn’t have the expert-level features you’ll get with some apps – for example, you can’t set up your preferred DNS server – but ExpressVPN’s Android offer has enough functionality for most people to make it easier to use. Better yet, install the app and you can try the service for free for seven days, and you won’t get the offer if you sign up on the website.
